April 5 auction to help fund student public interest work

March 28, 2012

PORTLAND, Maine – The annual silent and live auction to benefit the Maine Association for Public Interest Law (MAPIL) will be held Thursday, April 5, at the University of Maine Law School building on Deering Avenue.

Items to be auctioned range from Boston Celtics tickets to handmade jewelry, gift cards for local retailers and even a seaplane ride with a private pilot.

Money raised at the event will support fellowships for Maine Law students to provide legal services for low-income residents. MAPIL is a student-run organization that provides a benefit to the community at large, while giving students practical experience within the public interest areas of law, policy and entrepreneurship. The popular MAPIL auction is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, and it brings together people from all walks of life.

There is no admission fee, and the event is open to the public. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m.; the live auction begins at 6:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar, appetizers and a jazz trio from the Music School at the University of Southern Maine.

“Our fellowships provide funds to support our students while they are working in what would otherwise be unpaid positions,” said Taylor Kilgore, ’13, of the MAPIL event and fundraising committee.
