May 14, 2012
PORTLAND, Maine – Vendean Vafiades, a highly respected lawyer, public servant and longtime advocate for justice, will join the University of Maine School of Law as Director of Advancement and External Affairs.
Vafiades starts at Maine Law on May 21. She leaves her post with the Maine Public Utilities Commission, on which she has served as a Commissioner since January 2007.
A native of the Bangor area, Vafiades graduated from Maine Law in 1985. She previously served as a Maine District Court Judge, Chief Judge of the Maine District Court, Chief Counsel to the University of Maine System, Chief Deputy Attorney General for the State of Maine, attorney at Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson, and Executive Director of the Maine Women’s Lobby. Among her volunteer activities, Vafiades was President of the Maine Bar Foundation and President of the Maine Civil Liberties Union.
“I consider working for the law school as a way to support an institution that provided me with an excellent legal education and to join higher education administration again, as I had enjoyed my prior position as University of Maine System Counsel,” Vafiades said. “The law school offers much to Maine and provides growing support to the business and legal community, as well free legal assistance to vulnerable citizens. I'm ready to go and looking forward to promoting this great legal institution.”
Vafiades received the L. Kinvin Wroth Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Maine School of Law in 2009. She will manage the Law School’s strategy to expand resources and to grow and strengthen institutional relationships.
“Vendean brings a wide range of experience and deep skill to this position. She has been a leader in the judiciary, the legal profession, and the public arena, consistently demonstrating excellence and commitment to service,” said Dean Peter Pitegoff. “We are delighted that she accepted our offer to be Director of Advancement and External Affairs.”
