Legal Practice Day
Join the Career Services Office on Saturday, January 28, 2012 for Legal Practice Day. There will be six panels discussing a wide variety of practice areas. Each panel consists of Maine Law grads practicing within the field. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from local attorneys and to network!
Job Fairs
Every year, legal job fairs are organized by various organizations around the country. These events are attended by many law firms, particularly larger firms, and are a useful opportunity for law students to meet and interview with firms outside of Maine that generally do not take part in on-campus interviewing here at the Law School.
The Career Services Office assists students by making available the details of legal job fairs in which the Law School participates, providing information on interviewing employers and gathering student application materials for submission to the employers.
Maine Law students frequently participate in several legal job fairs, including the New Hampshire Legal Job Fair, the National LGBT Bar Association's Annual Career Fair, the Equal Justice Works Career Fair, the Loyola Patent Law Interview Program, the Northeast BLSA Job Fair, and others.
For more information on Legal Job Fairs, please get in touch with the CSO.
Lavender Law Career Fair
This year's National LGBT Bar Association's Lavender Law Career Fair is being held Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Washington, DC. It's a terrific job fair for all students--not just GLBT students--and it attracts many recruiting employers (130-plus last year) and students (500-plus last year) from all over the country. The career fair is an all day event on Thursday, followed by a two-day annual conference on Friday & Saturday, which is also well worth attending.

25th Annual Robert M. Cover Public Interest Law Retreat
If you're passionate about public interest law, consider attending the 25th Annual Robert M. Cover Public Interest Law Retreat, which will be held at the end of this month in southern New Hampshire, just a couple of hours drive from Maine Law. The retreat is a gathering of public interest law students, lawyers, and professors from all over. There are workshops, panels and speakers, as well as lots of networking, socializing, and recreational opportunities. The retreat is organized this year Western New England College of Law, with the assistance and sponsorship of Yale Law School and the Society of American Law Teachers.
Where: Sargent Retreat Center in Peterborough, NH
When: March 2-4, 2012 (Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon)
Cost: $150 (includes retreat fees, lodging, and all meals/food) [but see below!]
Don't miss this opportunity to connect with the public interest law community! For more information about the retreat and registration details, visit http://www.law.yale.edu/news/coverretreat12.htm. The registration deadline is February 16, but space at the Retreat Center is limited so early registration is encouraged.
Financial Assistance
The law school has agreed to pay the retreat's total $150 cost (room, board & registration fee) for up to five (5) students. To apply for financial assistance, please prepare an (i) updated resume and (ii) a letter addressed to Sherry L. Abbott, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, briefly explaining why you wish to attend the Robert M. Cover Public Interest Law Retreat, and deliver both to the Career Services Office by noon on Thursday, January 19. You may deliver them in person, by post, or by email (lawcareer@usm.maine.edu). If we receive more than 5 applications, we'll choose the recipients by lottery.
Carpooling
Consider carpooling to the retreat as a way of saving costs to yourselves and the environment. Our students have often carpooled to the retreat in past years.
